Casa Gaia is a beautiful ecological house. Self-built 'poco a poco' over the last 8 years, it is replete with loving details: wooden ceilings, terracotta tiles, stone walls, natural render, covered patios and other spaces in full sun... the house is flooded with soft amber light on long summer afternoons.
The house is about 5 km from Vejer de la Frontera, and a little further from the sea. It is reached on a graded road, and while there is no problem for most vehicles, we don't recommend it to drivers of Porsche cars! On the drive to the house from Vejer you can catch glimpses of the African coastline in the distance, and on clear nights you can see the lights of Tangiers.
The house is independant of mains: electricity is supplied by solar panels, and water is from a well. Outside there are 6000 square metres of grounds, some planted as vegetable and flower gardens, some with fruit trees, and a large part is being reforested with carob, wild olive, acacia etc. The house shares an entrance patio with the Studio, but has private verandas and a covered patio with sea views. Patio furniture and portable barbecue are provided.
Enter the front door and you find yourself in a hall with the bathroom opposite you (toilet, shower, bath, wash basin). A doorway to your right leads into bedroom 1 (terracotta tiles, wooden ceiling, double bed with futon mattress, 2 handmade pine wardrobes, natural clay render, french windows onto covered veranda with sea views.) To your left is an archway through to the kitchen/living room area (open plan with terracotta tiles, wooden ceiling, sofa and built in seating area, wooden dining table and 6 chairs, fridge, gas hob and oven, double sink, french windows onto covered patio with sea views.) Upstairs are bedrooms 2 and 3. Bedroom 3 is accessed through bedroom 2 and separated by a curtained doorway. Each room has wooden floors and roofs and twin beds, with shelving for clothes storage.
We supply sheets and towels (but not beach towels) for our guests. There are not usually many mosquitoes in our area, but we provide mosquito nets for every bed for a comfortable night's sleep.
Casa Gaia has full electrical installation throughout, but plugs are of the standard European 2-pin variety, so please bring adapters if you want to use your laptop or charge your mobile phone. The supply is 240 volts, but is not suitable for appliances like hairdryers and electric kettles that use a lot of electricity. We supply a small cd and cassette player.
We will be on hand to deal with any questions or problems that may arise during your stay, and to water the gardens once a day in the evening.
